Golite Surge Lite Boot
I usually wear a fairly clunky boot for hiking so I wasn't sure what I thought about the ultra light Golite Surge Lite boot when I first tried on a pair. Then I hit the trails and became a fan! The Surge Lite is incredibly lightweight--it feels lighter than a running shoe--but it also provides adequate support. That surprised me. Every time I wear these fastpacking boots I think they won't be enough for me, but every time I end up happy I wore them. The soles are flexible, but stiffer than I thought they'd be. My ankles feel supported, and I like the traction I get. The soles are thin and covered in tiny gripper nubs that are just right for trails and wet surfaces. I really like the lacing system, which is simple and unobtrusive. I actually prefer boots with grommets rather than hooks because sometimes my laces can get caught in the hooks or the hooks can snag my pant legs. I also like the insoles--they come with extra pieces that can be added or removed until I get the desired thickness and width I want. Another thing I noticed about the Surge Lite boot--my feet feel more neutral in them than in my running shoes, and I like that. Sometimes in running shoes, and in boots, it feels like my heels are raised higher than my forefeet. With the Surge Lite boots, I feel like my heels and forefeet are more level. Finally, these boots seem to breath well. My feet get very hot when I hike, but they never overheat in these boots. Available in men's sizes 7-14, including half sizes. Colors: Fossil, Steel/Flinstone. Bottom Line: The Surge Lite boot is great for light hiking, and as an all-around trail boot. Because they have thinner soles and don't have lots of cushioning I wouldn't recommend them for backpacking or hiking on seriously rocky trails.--B.M. (May 2011) BUY ONLINE: $119.95,click to shop.
